How to play Klondike Solitaire
Your goal is to move all 52 cards onto four foundation piles, one per suit, in order from Ace through King.
The layout
- Tableau: Seven columns. The first column has one face-up card; each next column has one more card, with only the top card face up.
- Foundations: Four empty piles above the tableau. Only an Ace can start a foundation; then add cards of the same suit in ascending rank.
- Stock and waste: Remaining cards form the stock. Turn cards to the waste pile (one or three at a time, depending on your setting). You may recycle the waste back to the stock when empty, if the rules allow.
Moving cards
- On the tableau, build downward in alternating colors (red on black, black on red). Only a King (or a valid stack starting with a King) may fill an empty column.
- Move any face-up card or legal stack between tableau columns.
- Move the top waste card to tableau or foundation when legal.
- Face-down tableau cards flip face up when exposed.
Winning
You win when all cards are on the foundations. Not every deal is solvable—that is part of the challenge.
Scoring (optional)
Switch scoring on for the traditional point system: +5 for moving a waste card to the tableau, +10 for any card to a foundation, +5 for turning over a tableau card, and −15 for taking a card back from a foundation. Recycling the waste costs points (−100 in draw 1, −20 in draw 3). Win quickly for a time bonus.
Using this game
Drag a card (or a stack) to where it should go, or tap a card and then tap its destination. Double-tap a card to send it to a foundation. Use Hint to highlight a suggested move and Undo to take back mistakes.
Tips and strategy
- Expose hidden tableau cards before drawing from the stock when you can.
- Do not empty a column unless you have a King ready to place, or a good reason to wait.
- Move Aces and Twos to foundations early; be cautious moving higher cards off the tableau.
- In draw-3 mode, note the order of cards in the waste—you may need to plan several turns ahead.
Playing on a phone or tablet
Drag a card with your finger, or tap it and then tap a valid destination. Use Undo if you slip.
