Golf

Thirty-five cards are dealt face up in seven columns of five. One card starts the waste, and sixteen remain in the stock. Play the bottom card of a column when it is one rank higher or lower than the waste. Suit does not matter, and a king does not meet an ace. The score is how many cards remain. Lower is better.

Rules and help

Only the bottom card of a column can move, and only onto the waste.

How to play

  • Layout. Seven columns of five face-up cards. Only the bottom card plays. The card above it plays next.
  • Remove. Suit does not matter. The card must be one rank higher or lower than the waste, and it becomes the waste. An ace meets only a two. A king meets only a queen.
  • Stock. Draw one card at any time, even when a column card fits. The stock is not turned over again.
  • Score. The deal ends when the columns are clear, or when the stock is empty and nothing is one rank away. The score is cards left in the columns. Lower is better. Zero is a clear board. Stock cards do not change the score.
  • Controls. Tap a bottom card, or drag it onto the waste. Tap the stock to draw. Undo takes back a play or a draw, including the move that ended the deal. Hint marks a move. Left is cards still in the columns. Best is your lowest finished score.

Tips

  • A king leaves a column only onto a queen, and an ace only onto a two.
  • When two cards fit, play from the taller column.
  • Draw while a card still fits if that card leads away from a queen or a two you need.
  • A clear board scores zero even if cards remain in the stock.

Playing on a phone or tablet

Tap the bottom card of a column, or drag it onto the waste. The stock and the waste sit under the columns. Swipe sideways if the columns are wider than the screen.

Frequently asked questions

Do an ace and a king connect?
No. An ace plays only on a two, and a two plays on an ace. A king plays only on a queen, and a queen plays on a king.
What is the score?
The number of cards still in the columns when the deal ends. Zero means the columns are clear. Cards left in the stock do not change the score. Lower is better.
Can the stock be turned over again?
No. Each stock card is drawn once. The deal ends when the stock is empty and no bottom card is one rank away, or when the columns are clear.
