Rules and help

How to play Tray Recall

Press Start. A tray of shape-and-color items appears for a short study time, then hides. When it returns, exactly one item is gone and the rest are shuffled. Pick the missing item from the choice list. There is no timer while you answer.

Items

Each item is one shape in one named color, for example a blue triangle or an emerald square. The name is printed under every tray token and on every choice, so you are not relying on color alone. Distractors share a shape or a color with something from the tray, so you must remember both. No item is repeated on the tray or in the choices.

Difficulty

  • Easy — 4 items, 10 seconds to study, 4 choices.
  • Medium — 6 items, 8 seconds to study, 6 choices.
  • Hard — 8 items, 6 seconds to study, 8 choices.

Changing difficulty starts a fresh round.

Scoring

A correct pick continues your streak. A miss resets it to zero. Best is your longest streak for that difficulty on this device.

Using this game

During study you can press Ready early to hide the tray. Tap a choice, or press its number key when the keys are shown. Play again deals a new random tray at the same difficulty.

Tips

  • Say the full name aloud—“amber diamond, teal circle”—so shape and color stick together.
  • When the tray returns, scan for look-alikes: a blue square still there does not clear every blue choice.
  • On Hard, group by color first, then notice which shape left that group.
  • If the study time feels short, press Ready once you have a list; answering is untimed.

Playing on a phone or tablet

Tap the missing item in the choice list. Difficulty and Start stay in the toolbar above the tray.

Frequently asked questions

What is Kim's Game?
Kim's Game is a traditional observation exercise: study a set of objects, cover them, then say what changed or what was there. Scouts often play it with everyday objects. Tray Recall is an original online version that asks which shape-and-color item went missing. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by any Scout organization.
How is the score counted?
Each round has one correct answer: the missing item. A correct pick adds one to your streak. A miss resets the streak to zero. Best is the longest streak for that difficulty on this device.
Can the empty space on the tray give the answer away?
No. After the hide, the remaining items are shuffled into a new order, so you cannot rely on a blank slot.
Where is my best streak kept?
In this browser, on this device, separately for Easy, Medium, and Hard. Clearing site data for Play Solo removes it. Nothing is sent to a server.
